Nothing to Lose by J.A. Jance is a 2022 William Morrow publication.

Back when Beaumont was still a homicide detective, his partner, Sue, was murdered by her ex-husband. Her teenage son, Jared, called Beaumont for help. He urged, Jared to grab his younger brother, Chris, and leave. Now years later, Jared shows up asking J.P. for help finding Chris, who has been missing for longer than anyone realized. Out of respect for Sue’s memory, he agrees to take the case, which means travelling to Alaska right before the Christmas holidays.

Upon arrival a huge storm arrives, forcing J.P. to hire a driver to get him around so he can interview people who knew Chris. His driver turns out to be prickly, but a huge asset, as he traces Chris’s last known whereabouts, getting a better feel for who he was, and who might have wanted him to disappear…

This case is personal for Beaumont because of Sue- and his sense of duty to her. Early on we get a pretty good idea of what might have become of Chris, but this only opens a slew of other questions, and leads J.P. to Chris’ former girlfriend, which then blows the lid wide open on the case which takes a turn no one could have imagined…

I am thankful this book was more like a pure detective story and that Beaumont left off the sermonizing this time around. The story unfolds nicely with good timing and well-placed revelations. Going into this story one could never have guessed the direction the case would go.

Overall, this is a well-round detective style mystery. Beaumont’s experience stands out as he navigates mother nature, the evil and greedy side of humanity, while bringing out the best possible outcome for all those concerned. Well done, J.P.!!

I have followed Beaumont through his career, marriage, emotions ranging from joy and happiness to near despair, but it had still been so long since I had picked up another book and the series and revisited what was one of my favorite characters. No excuse. I was glad to see that J.P is still one of my favorite characters and the books are still interesting, and believable. JP has aged while I was away, and his career has changed. He is retired, but still takes an occasional case. This one was personal, and he couldn't have said "no" if he had been on his death bed. The story is about love, murder, family, evil, and the good and the bad of human nature. The youngest son of J.P.'s long ago, murdered partner, has gone missing, and the oldest son who J.P. hasn't seen for 20 years, asks for his help to find his brother. J.P. is determined that he owes it to Sue's memory and her son to find Christopher Danielson, before the boy's grandmother, passes away. The clues lead him to Alaska where J.P. meets some quirky characters, some homicidal characters, and characters that turn out to be helpful to his task. J.P is still holding it together and I promised him I wouldn't wait 5 years again to visit with him.

Audiobook…..read by Mike Ortega
….9 hours and 27 minutes

Nothing like starting backwards…
“Nothing to Lose” is the 25th novel of J.P. Beaumont series.
So,
this was my first book by J.A. Jance….
I can totally understand why she has such a large following.

J. A. Jance writes with a ton of heart.
I enjoy a good police procedural novel from time to time —and it was fun- heartwarming hanging out with her star-protagonist.
Beaumont is a very likable guy.
From time to time, Beaumont reminded me of Bill Hodges - from Stephen King’s Mercedes series. (loved that series).

“Nothing to Lose” has a lot going on for it —
…great characters-(supporting characters too)
…marvelous storytelling-
…wonderful dialogue-
…real life daily disasters-
…funny-bone humor-
…family values-
…the setting in Alaska-in the middle of chilly winter was added enjoyment.
…no graphic violence!!

Yep… this book fit a craving I had.
I’d be happy to read J. A. Jance again…. no qualms not to.

It was sweet to read what one reviewer wrote:
“I read the very first J.P. Beaumont novel the year I got married to my soul mate, and have read all 25 of them since I just finished this one, the 25th”.
Soooo sweet! (Happy anniversary to the lovely couple)

Welcome back, J.P. Beaumont! Now retired from the Seattle police force and cutting back on his private detective activities, J.P. lives a quiet life in Bellingham, Washington, where his wife, Mel Soames, is the chief of police. He’s more or less settled into his quiet lifestyle training Sarah, their newly rescued Irish wolfhound. His assignment, aside from trying to convince Sarah that a blizzard is not evil falling from the sky, is to decorate the Christmas tree as his wife takes off for a lunch meeting with the mayor.

While Mel is away, the doorbell rings. A young man introduces himself as Jared Danielson, a name that immediately jolts J.P. back to the darkest event from his past. Jared was once a teenager with a little brother, Chris, who survived only because their mother, Sue, and J.P.’s partner on the homicide squad called J.P. to her home. Her husband had a gun and was on a rampage. J.P. arrived on the scene and told Jared to grab Chris and flee just as their father shot and killed Sue. The boys were sent off to Ohio in the care of Sue’s family. Following this devastating incident, J.P. battled PTSD and alcoholism.

Now a fully grown man and a priest, Jared tells J.P. that he is seeking the whereabouts of Chris, who he hasn’t been in touch with in over two years. Although J.P. has given up his private practice, he still holds a license and agrees to take on the search. What follows is a true J. A. Jance gumshoe adventure, delivered in her customary conversational style. These books are quite different from her Joanna Brady series, which deals in high-end cyber-communications.

It turns out that Chris disappeared one night after leaving work to help a woman fix a tire. He was due back to his girlfriend’s house but never showed up. Chris had been an unruly kid in junior high and was sent away to live with his grandparents. He ran with a rough crowd and was engaged in drinking, smoking and stealing money from his grandparents. Having run away more than once, he eventually ended up in Homer, Alaska, with another grandparent and seemed to settle down. Two years ago, just before his high school graduation, he got his girlfriend pregnant. Given his past behavior, her parents were rigorously against marriage, so it was assumed that he had just run off again. She kept the baby and named him after his father, but no one reported him missing.

Jared suspects foul play since there is no evidence of a renewed driver’s license or immunization records needed to pass through Canada to the U.S. J.P. tells Jared to get a DNA test to help track him down; unidentified remains of a skull were found near Homer around the time that Chris disappeared.

Through a local, J.P. finds an Alaskan driver who knows the back country. Twink Winkleman is a true rough and ready Alaskan character. A heavy smoker built like a fullback, she owns an ancient but reliable Travelall with heavy-duty snow tires and a front snow blade to get them through hell, high water, blizzards and, if necessary, a security gate that comes in handy during a chase scene at the airport. Unlike her Travelall, her cell phone is up to date with a built-in credit card reader that --- at $750 a day, plus meals and expenses --- is also quite helpful.

This is the J.A. Jance I love. Her characterizations and ability to spin a tale keep you turning pages well into the night.

I love this series. The 25th book is as good as the 1st. I really like that Ms Jance has allowed her main character and his family to age and grow. The Beaumont series is truly my all time favorite. There is nothing more I can say. If you haven't read J.A. Jance books, you have missed out for sure. Thank you so much for giving me hours of enjoyment.

This is Crime/Mystery which is one of my favorite genres, plus this one takes place in Alaska which was fun. I like this author. I'm not as familiar with this particular series as I am with others....but I liked this one.

The ending was highly satisfying. The author also built suspicion all throughout. The "who did it" wasn't hard to deduce but the story was well crafted with clues and interesting characters. This was a fun read for my afternoon. So 4 stars.

A young man that retired detective J.P.Beaumont helped twenty years ago is back looking for help again. Jared's grandmother is dying and his younger brother Chris is missing. These two boys were orphaned when Beau's partner was killed in a domestic violence situation so it's personal for him. Off to Alaska where Chris was living years ago.

Old bloodhound Beau is on the scent. Don't expect chase scenes or shootouts since Beau is 74 now. It's just a good mystery with a good methodical investigation. About mid-book, Beau and I had the same idea about who the bad guy might be. I liked watching Beau prove it. It warmed my heart to read about the dogs Beau has rescued.

I particularly enjoyed the character of Twink.

Nothing to Lose by J. A. Jance is a very highly recommended procedural featuring J. P. Beaumont.

J. P. Beaumont (Beau), currently a PI, formerly a homicide detective with the Seattle PD, always felt guilty over the murder of his partner, Sue Danielson by her ex-husband, who then killed himself. Her two sons went to live with her parents in Ohio. Beau is surprised when her older son, Jared, comes to see him and ask for help in finding his younger brother, Christopher. Apparently Chris ran away as a teen and went to Alaska, where his father's parent's live. He hasn't been heard from since and his grandmother in Ohio is in ill health and wants to see him again.

Beau takes on the case pro bono and heads to Alaska to find Chris. What he finds is a complicated case involving much more than a missing person. Beau uses his many law enforcement resources, contacts, and experience to untangle the secrets and find the answers needed.

Even though this is a long running series and character, new readers will be able to jump right in and read Nothing to Lose without needing any additional background. Beau is a fully realized character and Jance includes everything readers need to know about him to easily follow the plot. He is personable, intelligent and a devoted husband.

This is a well written story, a solid PI procedural, and I completely enjoyed it. There were no outlandish jumps in logic, all the twists or unexpected turns in the novel came logically out of the investigation. Beau carefully follows clues through interviews and additional information and follows it all to intelligent, plausible conclusions. Certainly clues indicate the suspect and the motive, so it is not a surprise when you guess the guilty party while reading. The pleasure is in following the clues and evidence, and gather enough proof for law enforcement to charge the person. It was really a comfortable pleasure to read Nothing to Lose.

Jance’s 25th offering in the J.P. Beaumont mystery series finds the 74-year-old former homicide detective turned PI working a twelve-year-old missing person case. The last place that Chris Danielson was seen alive was in Homer, Alaska and his brother Jared wants to find him so that his aging mother can see Chris before she dies. J.P. takes the case pro bono as Chris and Jared are the sons of his deceased former partner.

Since the case is in Alaska just before Christmas, J.P. needs a driver to navigate the snow-covered roads. The charming Twinkle Winkleman (Twink) and her Travelall ‘Maude’ are the perfect solution. It doesn’t take long for J.P. to guess that Chris has been dead for the past dozen years, and has a pretty good idea of who committed the murder and why. The fun is following J.P. as he methodically uses his many law enforcement resources, contacts and experience to prove it.

J.P. Beaumont is back in Nothing to Loose by J.A. Jance. This time he gets involved in a missing person case that hits close to home for him. His old partner who was killed by her husband a long time ago had two sons. One is trying to find the other. This is a harrowing case for the old ex policeman but he will not back down. Once again we get the fine writing of Jance and a gallery of characters that makes this story great. Filled with questions and answers in a suspensefilled ride.

I read a lot of mysteries and rarely rate them with five stars even if I enjoy them. But this one was a police procedural which I like and Beau is a great character and so was Twink--and then there was Father Jared who played an important role as well as Harry, the coroner. And somehow, even iwth the evil and greed and murder, the story was heart-warming at the end. I hope there will be a #26.

This is the twenty-fifth novel about J P Beaumont and I have read them all. Now Beau is retired from the Seattle PD and Washington State homicide task force and is a private investigator. He lives in Bellingham where his wife is the Chief of Police. Beau's earlier experiences were full of action, suspense, and guns fired. This novel contains none of that, fitting for a man with two knee replacements.

I like Beau. He follows his heart in this novel as he searches for the missing son of his one time police partner, slain years ago. There are no gun battles but rather a dedicated and consistent pursuit of clues, connecting the dots. I was intrigued how Beau kept finding one more clue that led him to solve a murder from years ago and also nail a conniving villain. I really like Twink. What a gal. She was a good sidekick for Beau.

This novel contains a good balance of Beau's personal life and consistent pursuit of clues. I appreciate how Jance has kept readers involved in Beau's life as he changed careers, locations, yet always going after justice. This septuagenarian reader likes to read about a hero close to my own age. I'll be looking for his next adventure.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

3.5. Standard JP Beaumont. But I like how she has let him age. And Jance added some fun characters like Twinkle. Who gives Beau a run for his money.

I now enjoy three different series by J.A. Jance, but the J.P. Beaumont series was the first I had read. I started this series several years ago and am happy that it is still continuing. Beau is such a likable character and this missing person's case, which is personal to him, is interesting. The Alaska setting makes the story even more interesting. Some parts were a little predictable, but still an enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed this book. I have to say that I am a stickler about reading books in order. I picked up this book and was "shocked" that it was 25 in the series !! Well, I started to read it and really liked it - a lot. I guess there is a first time for everything. I doubt I'll go back to book 1 , since it was written pretty much in the dark ages ;-)

I am looking forward to picking up a few of the earlier in this series... a nice surprise for sure !

My first novel by this author. I liked her style of writing which gave me a mystery to solve which had balance. The main character is a flawed but kindhearted retired Seattle PD homicide detective living in Alaska as a sometimes private detective. I enjoyed his observations and sense of humor. Kind of an old-timey character.
The author manages to tell this “who done it” tale without overly gruesome scenes which I appreciated.

I don't know if I am getting tired or JP is, either way I am starting to enjoy these books a little less as time goes on. It was still a good read and it is a series I will continue with.
In this one Beau takes a trip down memory lane and he catches up with people from his past and in doing so solves a mystery.

Lovely read. Long time since I have read a J P Beaumont mystery.
He is older now (74 yrs) and retired .. and surprise married to Mel the acting police chief of Bellingham, WA. He’s had both knees replaced. And is owner of an Irish wolfhound (big dog !) named Sarah.
His former partner at Seattle PD was Sue Danielson.
The plot centers around her two boys.
Twink is a character I won’t soon forget. She works in Anchorage, Alaska. Her transportation business is carried out in a yellow Travelall that has a snowplow on the front end.
Mostly this story is set in Alaska.
I hope to catch up on the novels I have missed.
JP has sobered up and now has lots of family. I count four grands too.
Own this in hardcover.

Thank you to Booklist for the ARC and the opportunity to review this title!

Retired homicide detective J. P. Beaumont is still reeling from the murder of his partner, Sue Danielson. Suffering from frequent nightmares, Beaumont revisits his memory of the night Sue’s ex-husband killed her and took his own life. Beaumont still blames himself for not responding more quickly to a call for help from Sue's son Jared. Fortunately, Beaumont was able to help Jared and Sue’s other son, Chris, escape before they came to any harm. Now, 20 years later, Jared arrives unannounced at Beaumont’s house with another request for help. Chris is missing and Jared wants Beaumont to find him. Beaumont doesn’t hesitate to take the case and makes the arduous journey to snowy Homer, Alaska. In his attempt to find Chris, Beaumont stumbles onto another case that just might give him the answers he needs. Jance’s latest Beaumont novel is thoroughly addictive. The plot moves steadily forward, and Beaumont's encounters with many of Homer’s colorful residents add humor and a touch of lightheartedness to the otherwise heavy subject matter. A treat for Beaumont fans, but those new to the series will have no trouble following along. Copyright 2022 Booklist Reviews.

J. A. Jance gets better and better (and she was already a very good storyteller with excellent character development abilities regularly on display). Washington state retired Seattle homicide detective and now private investigator J. P. Beaumont travels to Alaska in winter in this adventure. He is searching for the long missing younger son of his former partner, several years deceased, Sue Danielson.

Jance’s vivid imagination shines with the creation of Twinkle Winkleman and her Travelall Maude. The search for Chris Danielson leads to the discovery of more than one suspicious death. A whole array of new characters are so well done ! - all interesting, and sometimes pulling at heartstrings, sometimes despicable. Professor Harry Raines is another not to be forgotten smart and emotionally intelligent individual who is introduced here. The bit of medicine man lore only enhances the already gripping story. And let’s not forget the delightful wolfie Sarah !

Don’t miss this confounding mystery and outstanding story.

“Nothing to Lose” is as beautifully and expertly done as a crime-story/mystery can be, exactly what one might expect from a writer as experienced as J.A. Jance.

Here, retired police detective J.B. Beaumont travels to Alaska to explore a cold case disappearance never officially opened as a crime. As might be expected, the backstory is hugely complicated, but the facts are reported with exactly the level of detail and repetition a reader needs to stay on track. And if the pace seems slow initially, it’s a subtle reminder that private-eye Beaumont is now seventy-four years old and has replacement knees.

Yet the tale is fresh and vigorous—with appealingly eccentric characters and cold and snowy Alaska as its memorable backdrop. A mighty satisfying conclusion too.

A solid mystery with one of my favorite characters, former homicide detective J.P. Beaumont, who is now semi retired and working as a private investigator. I got so involved in the story, and my desire for the outcome I wanted, that I kept reading long into the night, finally turning the last page just before 2:00 am. I lived in Anchorage for 3 years, so I loved having the setting placed both there and in Homer, Alaska. It really took me back to my time there, a time that was full of fun and adventure. All the descriptions of driving in the snow and ice there definitely brought back some memories.

It is early December as Nothing to Lose: A J. P. Beaumont Novel by J.A. Jance begins and Mel wants J.P. to put out the Christmas decorations as he will be home for the day. Mel is the chief of police and has her duties along with meetings with the mayor and the city council in separate events. The winter storm won’t help her either.

So, it is just him and their dog and many boxes of decorations when a knock at the door stops everything. It has been nearly twenty years since J.P. Beaumont last saw Jared Danielson. That was the night that J. P.’s partner, Sue Danielson, was shot and killed by her ex-husband, Richard Danielson. J. P. had tried to save her and could not. J.P. has always had a lot of guilt over that fact as well as his decisions that horrible night. Seeing Jared Danielson on his snowy doorstep brings everything back with a vengeance.

Jared Danielson is now a catholic priest. He has been through some things over the years, but has pulled himself together because of his own efforts and support from other folks who helped along the way. In the here and now, he needs J. P.’s help finding his brother, Chris.

Chris has always blamed Jared for their mom’s death as he believes that if they had not left, their father would not have murdered their mom. The fact is that they had run, because J. P. told Jared to take his brother and run, no doubt saved their lives. Chris believes otherwise, despite all evidence to the contrary, and the issue has never been resolved. While going to home of their mom’s parents in Ohio had worked out well for Jared, Chris had a far harder time. He eventually ran away and wound up in Homer, Alaska, living with the grandparents on their father’s side of the family.

Now with Grandma Hinkle, Sue Daniel’s mom, in assisted living and not doing well, time is of the essence. Grandma Hinkle is desperate to try and make things right with Chris before she dies. Father Jared Danielson wants J. P.’s help in finding his brother and thereby giving the family a chance to reconcile.

While Jared has some ideas what Chris was doing in 2006 thanks to an old yearbook, a dozen years have passed. That is a lot of time to account for and there is not much information readily available. That means to get the answers they all need; J. P. is going to have to go to Alaska.

What follows is a complex tale of mystery and deceit with an occasional laugh out loud moment as J. P. deals with locals in Alaska and winter weather. Such details serve as colorful background for a complex mystery that truly is a cold case – literally and figuratively. A lot if going on here along with the internal grief and self-doubt J. P. is dealing with as he works to find Chris and the answers to many questions.

While it is always preferable to read a series in order, those new to the world of J.P. Beaumont could start here. Most of the reminiscing about earlier events is tied into the horrible events of that night which was many books ago in the series. Obviously, those who are familiar with the series and caught up will get more out of this read than others.

All and all, Nothing To Lose: A J. P. Beaumont Novel is another solidly good read in the long running series. Recommended.

My reading copy came from the Dallas Public Library System via the Libby/OverDrive App.

When J. P. Beaumont (Beau) was still a detective, his partner was Sue Danielson. The night her former husband appeared in their home agitated and mean, Jared called Beau in a panic. Beau dropped everything and rushed to their help in time to get the boys outside and out of the line of gunshots and abuse, but not Sue. Sue's former husband had already brutally murdered her and killed himself. Both boys, Jared and Chris, were sent to live in Ohio with Sue's parents after the funerals. Ohio was not a happy place for the boys, but Jared did graduate from high school and was in law enforcement before changing his life plans. Chris' grades suffered and he ultimately ran away at 17.

Years have passed and Beau is now a PI; Jared has once again contacted him to find his brother, Chris. Their grandmother is near death and Jared feels it's time Chris returned to Ohio after running away so many years ago. Beau is anxious to bring Jared and Chris together again; he still feels some guilt for Sue's death. "If only I had arrived a minute earlier," he still thinks. He takes the case pro bono. And quickly finds Chris had plans to return to Ohio to make amends, a popular and intelligent pregnant girlfriend, and was a dependable employee at a local eatery called "Zig's Place". What went so wrong in his life?

J.A. Jance provides a well-written story with likeable characters who have daily problems and foibles like all of us which are dealt with refreshing humor throughout the book. There are no violent murder scenes or graphic sexual escapades; this novel is for anyone. It is laced with family values and integrity, yet has just the right amount of "wild child behaviors" included to keep it interesting and a little racy. The dialogue is well done and funny while Beau interacts with his driver (a rough, yet knowledgeable female in Alaska), his wife, and everyone he interviews. And the adult secrets, lies and deceptions! WOW this is an excellent murder mystery although the red flags indicate who the killer is long before the end, this is a fast-paced read for all ages.

J.A. Jance books will be my next go-to! Found this so enjoyable that reading her previous 25 novels is imperative. I have nothing to loose!

J.P. Beaumont Rides to the Rescue in Search of a Missing Person and Finds So Much More

Now a PI, J.P. Beaumont is called upon to find a missing man, Christopher Danielson, before his ailing grandmother passes away. Required to go to Alaska to search for Christopher, J.P. meets quirky characters, homicidal characters and characters that are welcoming and helpful, too. He manages to solve the case he is working on and so much more, reuniting family members and getting rid of nightmares that have haunted him for decades. Good, fast-paced read. I want to go to Alaska now and take a ride with Twink in Maude! I checked out a copy of this book from my local library using the Libby App. I as not required to write a positive review. All opinion expressed are my own.

I loved the voice for the audiobook. I feel like the voice actor did a wonderful job embodying Detective Beaumont's character. I love that this is the first book in the series that I read and I wasn't left confused about the backstory. I also like that the format of the book was a one sided conversation, like you were sitting in Detective Beaumont's living room listening to him tell you his story. Well done. I gave it 4 stars because I feel like they made some big assumptions about the mystery and they were too easily confirmed. There wasn't any kind of plot twist and that was a little disappointing to be honest. Overall a great read.

A bit disappointed in this one. I’d read the first two in the series and thought I’d try a recent one.
It wasn’t so much a mystery as a progression of facts to a conclusion. No red herrings or twists. There was a thriller aspect of it, though. A bit too much on the cozy side for me. A couple of the characters ere okay too, especially Twinkle Winkleman, the driver, and Prof. Harriet Raines, the anthropologist.
