Spanning six decades, Tony Conrads prodigious career roamed across a boundless array of disciplines and roles, including visual artist, filmmaker, violinist, composer, cable access activist, and professor. He made major contributions in the emergent fields of minimal music composition and structural film in the 1960s, and then carried his pioneering work into the realm of rock and drone music, video and performance art, and cable access television. Influencing the development of multiple artistic movements as both a collaborator and outside agitator, Conrad evaded any singular classification, and yet had a profound influence on his contemporaries and subsequent generations.

Anthony Schmalz “Tony” Conrad (March 7, 1940 – April 9, 2016) was an American avant-garde video artist, experimental filmmaker, musician, composer, sound artist, teacher, and writer. Conrad indelibly altered the course of contemporary art and thought. Born in New Hampshire, he earned a mathematics degree from Harvard and soon became a central figure in the 1960’s New York scene. From a young age he stretched the limits of music and performance, drafting post-Cagean music compositions and text pieces—and collaborating with artists such as Henry Flynt, Jack Smith, and, with the legendary drone ensemble Theatre of Eternal Music, La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela, and John Cale. By the mid-’60s, Conrad had begun to focus his attention on film; in 1966, he created The Flicker, a stroboscopic masterpiece which stands as one of the first examples of structural film.

The posthumous uploads do not seem to have been contrived simply as a ‘boo’ from the beyond. They were a continuation of Wicka’s ongoing project of documenting individual life stories. (3) Yet Conrad’s own concern with the history and future of media no doubt provoked a deep consideration as to how the text-image-sound constellations of contemporary, online media would subsume the fact of his death – the videos were made shortly after he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. (4) The funny, moving and self-reflexive qualities of the five encounters, and their emergence online within seven days of Conrad’s passing, were in keeping with a decades-long, head-on engagement with media. They might also be included within the number of Conrad’s own works that utilise the mode of audience address, exemplified in the video In Line (1986).
